DOR...an experience!
Saw Nagesh Kukunoors "Dor" on TV yesterday...i would rather say that i experienced DOR. Nagesh proved himself to be a wonderful story teller again. After Hyderabad Blues, Rockford, Teen Deewarein, Iqbal...it was again his turn to keep me spellbound to the screen for the entire period of movie. I had read abour DOR since its release last year..it received excellent media and critical reviews...may be five stars....
A superbly weaved story that revolves around two main characters living in small villages of India...
Zeenat in Himachal Pradesh played by Gul Panag..who is valiantly attempting to save life of her beloved..while Meera in Rajasthan played by Ayesha takia...is surviving through the loss of her beloved and trying to come in terms with life.....They both have their own priorities, worries, joys and sorrows...but they both relate to each other through the event that brings their life to a turnaround point...the relation is more significant as they both represent two glaring faces of women of India..
one helpless and totally governed by the whims of society...while the other a strong and go getter...
one ventures out of a small village in Himachal pradesh to get what she feels is right...while the other struggles even to relish rasagulla and dance on the tune of hindi movie songs...
one manages to speak her heart out..every time..even manages to tell her in-laws that she thought of them to be Kanjoos, badhal, ghamandi, bewakoof....etc...while other finds it difficult to even have dialogue with herself on what her aspirations from life are...
and they both get linked to each o ther beautifully with out any typical mello drama of hindi films and in their simplicity too one cant remain aloof from their pians.....you actually live through it....
third important character is Bahurupiya...palyed by talented shreyas talpade..who after Iqbal has lived upto his reputation of being one of the upcoming and vesetile star of the industry..he plays the role of bahurupiya to the finess and provides many lighter moments...to zeenat and Meera and of copurse to the audiences...his antics would leave you with smiles...and the way these three burst into dance in the desert on "Kajara re.." is one of the high points ogf the movie.... while he engages himself to help Zeenat in her attempt...he also slowly gets emotionally involved with her..but with out any expectations .....and he stands by that spirit til the end...
There are other characters played by Girish karnad, Pratiksha Lonkar, Uttara baokar and Nagesh himself...who just do the gap filling and carry story ahead...Uttara plays a role of an elderly Rajasthani widow....who has gone throught he rigours of life and envys good life enjoyed by Meera...but appreciates what goes through mind and heart of young Meera...who bears a similar pain subsequently....the subtle change in relation is very touching and is to be seen to be felt.....
At the end...it is an out and out directors movie....Nagesh excells in conveying the pains in the story in a soft but still straight way...the backdrop of Himachals green and rajasthans Brown has been beautifully captured and landscape keeps you glued to the screen. Music of salim-suleiman is apt and goes with the mood of the movie..."Yeh Housala.."rendered bt Shafaqut and salim...is the highest point of DOR and is sure to touch your inner chord...and lastly...Ayesha..Gul...and Shreyas...they all get kudos for potraying their characters just the way story demanded....Cheers to them!
Finally...I was wondering how watching DOR on TV could become such a fine experience...it was actually due to un-interrupted show...with no advertisements in between...probably that had a desired effect...it was a welcome change in a ad infested channels otherwise...thanks to "FILMY" for that....
Must experience movie...i would say!
